Sam Nixon, photographer

Name: Sam Nixon
Year of Birth: 1982
Nationality: New Zealand
Based in: New York City

My father being a photographer I’d rummage through his prints and contact sheets and found them amazing. I remember flicking through his extensive photography book collection as a kid and just loving the Helmet Newton and Guy Bourdin books. I’d show all my friends the Robert Mappelthorpe book as it had a rude section that grossed us out but we loved it. My current influences are mostly in the form of film and moving imagery. Christopher Doyle’s cinematography (In the mood for love) is important to me and Terrence Malik’s films are just stunning with ‘Badlands’ my personal favorite.

Three people you would love to work with:
David Lynch, because of his sheer awkward genius. Die Antwoord, because they are the most interesting/weird people in music right now. Patricia Arquette because she played one of my favorite characters of all time in ‘True Romance’.

Who do you think is one to watch?
I think we should all watch out for Future Islands, they’re a band from Baltimore that I cant get enough of – go see them live!
