interview
When did you know that this was what you wanted to do with your life? How did you get started?
I knew when I was a young girl. I started by designing gowns for private clients when I was 19.
What effect (if any) do you think your childhood has had on the creativity you display as an adult? What are your earliest memories involving fashion?
I have many sisters. Growing up with so many women around I don’t find it surprising that femininity is such an integral part of my aesthetic.
What inspires you?
Nature, most of the time.
What is your design process?
Usually, first comes inspiration, then I sketch, drape and redesign. But that all depends on where the inspiration comes from, if a drape then of course the first step is a drape.
Have you ever doubted your talent/work? If so, how did you work through it?
Of course, but I just make sure that I am excited about the final product. If I am content (because nothing is ever perfect) with a garment then I can never feel regret.
Do you design with a specific client in mind? If so, who is that person?
The Azede Jean-Pierre customer is a feminine woman who is not afraid to flirt with androgyny once in a while. Her demeanor is that of a lady with a hidden sensuality about her. She is both delicate and dangerous.
Have commercialism and/or the media had any impact on your work? Is this good or bad?
We are all effected, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, I think it is a good thing for women to actually be able to wear the clothes that designers put out. That being said, I usually try my best to not let it dictate my process.
Who or what is something or someone fabulous that you think is underrated or overlooked?
Kat Dahlia
Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in your field?
Be an individual and be persistent, if you think about & work towards something with full focus, you will eventually get it.
